Great Science Doesn't Need to Die Because a Grant Runs Out.

Public Invention is running a pilot program to help researchers continue their work in an open, transparent, and collaborative way through a free post-doctoral bridge initiative. Our program offers:

✅ Infrastructure
✅ Mentorship and technical guidance
✅ Access to a community of mission-driven inventors
✅ A home for innovation

🧬 If you're a postdoc, engineer, or researcher whose project lost funding, we want to help you finish what you started.

Give Your Research a Second Life

When funding disappears, so does the promise of discovery. Let’s make sure bold ideas still get the chance they deserve. That’s why we have launched a pilot program to help postdocs restart defunded projects with infrastructure, community, and mentoring support they need to succeed at no cost.

Eligibility

We only support projects for public license and/or open access outputs.  Interested postdocs conducting research in one of these subject areas may be eligible to join our inaugural cohort:

🖥 Computer Science — Software engineering, theoretical CS, databases, graphics
🔌 Electrical Engineering — Solar micro-systems, PCBs, embedded systems, networking
🩺 Biomedical Engineering — Ventilators, oxygen generators, point-of-care diagnostics, tracking systems
🛠 Mechanical Engineering — Structural engineering, ferrofluids, CAD modeling
📐 Applied Mathematics — Solid geometry, optimization methods
🔬 Basic Physics — Low-energy systems, computational fluid dynamics

Benefits

For eligible projects, we offer the same kind of research capacity and project support that you would have received at the university. However, we do not employ researchers directly. All project costs are budgeted as direct line items and paid via invoice, including labor.

🧪 What You’ll Get:

  • Affiliation, so that you can receive funding and publish

  • Project management, so that you meet your project goals

  • Mentoring, so that you can gain PI skills and experience

  • Grant management, so that you get paid

Apply now to our Pilot Program - space is limited!

Enrollment Ends on June 30th

Inventing in the public, for the Public

At Public Invention, we believe that building in public, for the public, drives innovation. But as government-funded research roles vanish, we’re watching the engine of innovation stall in real time.

Join us in reimagining how invention happens and who it serves. If you're a donor or stakeholder, we invite you to scale an open-source innovation system that belongs to everyone.

With purpose,
The Public Invention Team
